“For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 4:6 (NKJV)
When Paul wrote to the church in Corinth, he wasn’t speaking from a life of ease or polished eloquence, but from deep personal experience, both of suffering and of grace. In this verse, he draws a stunning parallel between the creation of the world and the re-creation of the human heart.
Just as God once said, “Let there be light,” and there was light in the dark void, so too He speaks light into our sin-darkened hearts, shining the brilliance of Christ into our inner being. Christianity, you see, is not a system we adopt or a philosophy we follow; it is a miracle that happens to us.
The God of Creation Is the God of Regeneration
“For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness…”
This takes us back to Genesis 1. When all was dark and void, God spoke, and light exploded into being. That same God, Paul says, is at work in the heart of the believer.
Salvation is not the result of self-enlightenment or moral improvement. It is the work of the Creator God who, by sheer grace, speaks into the darkness of our hearts and causes the light of Christ to shine. The same power that hung stars in the sky is the power that saves your soul.
The Heart Is the Place of Divine Illumination
“…who has shone in our hearts…”
God doesn’t merely improve our minds or habits; He changes our hearts. He turns on the light in the deepest parts of us, giving us a new disposition, new affections, new desires.
This is why Christianity isn’t about religious performance; it’s about new birth. It is not merely adopting Christian behaviors; it is receiving the very life of Christ within. And when His light shines, we begin to see everything differently including ourselves, our sin, our Savior.
The Face of Christ Is the Fullness of God’s Glory
“…to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
What does the light reveal? The glory of God. And where is that glory most clearly displayed? In the face of Jesus Christ.
To see Christ is to see God. To behold His mercy, His humility, His obedience, His cross. It is to behold the very heart of God. No one has ever seen God, but in Jesus, we see Him unveiled. The more we gaze at Christ, the more we are transformed. He is the radiance of divine glory, and our hearts are made to treasure Him.
Let the Light Shine On
Christian, never forget: your salvation is a supernatural work of God. It is not your doing, it is God’s shining. And that light, once kindled, never goes out. Let it shine through you today, that others may see Christ in you.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, shine Your light ever brighter in my heart, that I may know and reflect the glory of Christ. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
May this devotional encourage you to marvel again at the miracle of salvation, to treasure the face of Christ, and to walk in the light that God has so graciously shone into your heart.
